Her parents were both computer engineers. Tim made circuits controlling model train sets as a child and later became interested in electronics. Tim Berners-Lee In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, an Internet-based hypermedia initiative for global information sharing while at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory. He wrote the first web client and server in 1990. Tim Berners-Lee's vision of a global hyperlinked information system became a possibility by the second half of the 1980s. By 1985, the global Internet began to proliferate in Europe and the Domain Name System (upon which the Uniform Resource Locator is built) came into being. In 1980 Tim Berners-Lee joined the staff of the physics CERN facility in Switzerland as a contract programmer. In his odd moments he began writing a program he called Enquire. Berners-Lee used Enquire to keep track of who had written which program and on which machine the program ran.
